Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact socially, and experience the world around them. People with autism may have differences in social communication, such as difficulty with back-and-forth conversations, understanding nonverbal cues, or developing peer relationships. They may also engage in repetitive behaviors or have focused interests, and they often experience sensory sensitivities to sounds, lights, textures, or other environmental input.
Autism is touching more and more lives as our understanding of it grows, and is described as a “spectrum” because it presents differently in every individual. At Midtown Psychology, we believe that autistic individuals present with many strengths associated with their neurodivergence. We aim to help all children and individuals demonstrate their unique abilities and also support them and their families navigate any emotional or social difficulties that may arise. We also provide support to the families and communities of autistic persons to assist in charting a course towards deeper understanding and a more meaningful connection.
At Midtown Psychology we use evidence-based interventions to address social, emotional, and interpersonal challenges in autistic youth and adults. The goal is to build skills, increase independence, reduce distress, and help individuals thrive in ways that honor their strengths and unique ways of experiencing the world.
